I really miss my dark morning coffee with a lot of half & half. In fact, I no longer drink coffee every morning, but I do enjoy a cup of organic coffee once in a while.
Although coffee is vegan, I stopped it for health reasons.
Coffee is one of the most intensively sprayed crops around. Although the debate continues on whether those pesticides make it into the coffee bean and our morning coffee, do you really want to chance it?
Since discovering this, I purchase only organic coffee and drink coffee outside my home only once-in-a-while. This is the way I approach my life now after years of health issues that I no longer have. I certainly don’t want to slip back into those health nightmares. I also realized that once I detoxed from coffee, I didn’t miss it every day.
And on top of that, I prefer really dark coffee with plenty of half & half. You just can’t duplicate the taste of that using coconut cream or coconut milk. Even though coconut cream has 9 times the fat content of half & half, it doesn’t come close to providing the same creamy dairy taste. With such high fat content for coconut cream, I’d rather give up my morning coffee and enjoy a cup with real, organic half & half occasionally.
Yes, I have to admit that I am sometimes a “dirty vegan.” No matter how long you eat vegan, your head never forgets all those favorite foods you used to consume. That’s when you have to decide if it’s worth the occasional indulgence or not.
When I Drink Coffee
Now when I drink coffee at home, it’s only organic and I use plenty of coconut milk – not coconut cream. Don’t make the mistake of purchasing a cheap organic coffee. These are usually sourced from foreign countries with organic laws that are not as strict as the certified organic label the US uses.
Java Planet is USDA certified organic, so it’s a brand you can trust, but it’s not the only one available. When doing your research, read the description of the coffee to make sure it’s certified organic and/or look for the certified organic label.
Worst Foods for Pesticides
Unfortunately, even if you keep a list of the worst foods for pesticides, that list will keep changing. New GMO crops are released to market every year, so be sure to check it often if you are not buying organic.
What’s your favorite way to drink coffee? During the winter I like it hot with plenty of cream. In the summer, I prefer iced coffee with plenty of cream. LOL!
